My hair has been the bane of my existence for about fifteen years now. When I was a little kid, I had thick, shiny, super-straight hair fashioned in a stylish and gender-radical bowl cut. Then, one day, I woke up with curly hair. But not just regular curly — frizzy, pouffy, curly in weird places and straight in others. It just got worse as I tried out different styles: bangs (horrible idea!); bangs in various stages of growing out; even an awful early 90's perm to even out the curl. As a teenager, I shaved my head on a few different occassions, which was all right, except it grew so fast and all the in-between pouffiness was unbearable. I will never forget one day in fifth grade, the coolest girl in class told me, "You know you could be really pretty, if you could just do something about that hair." I have heard her voice in my head pretty much every day since then.
Upon moving to Humidity Central, PA, my hair became more frizzy than ever. I began experimenting with different hair stylists and products, dropping mad cash on products from Ouidad and Curl Friends. Although I really liked Ouidad's leave-in conditioner, I gave it up after I made the conversion to natural products. Before I went natural, I had a chemical frizz reduction treatment, which made my hair less pouffy, but not less frizzy, and also totally dried out. I tried almost everything in Whole Foods' beauty aisle, and that stuff ain't cheap. I tried Bumble and Bumble curl cream, which is not particularly natural, but earned an okay rating from the Skin Deep report at The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. I liked the Bumble and Bumble frizz serum, but it didn't seem to last very long. Then, the other day, I got free sample of Aveda's new Be Curly line, and. . . it sort of worked. So I bought the whole damn 5-piece kit, which cost $75 and made me feel very guilty. I came home from work and twirled and curled and diffused and all of a sudden, I had awesome hair. I got all kinds of compliments. Unfortunately, I have not been able to repeat that awesomeness because I wake up late every single day. But this is the first time I have liked a product enough to recommend it.
I really really hate shopping and when I find something I like, I want to buy a lifetime's supply and never go shopping again. There are a couple of other things I have been trying to find for years, so I will just put this out here if anyone has any recommendations. I'm looking for low-heel, knee-high black boots that are comfortable enough to walk around the city in but not so industrial they look out of place with a skirt. I would prefer something non-leather but I could probably be persuaded to wear leather if all of the other factors are in place. I also really really need to find some good underwear. I admit, this might be my fault for always going the outlet store route here, but I am ready to make an investment. I'm looking for some comfy full coverage underwear that does not induce VPL. So far, I have tried Under Armour, Jockey's No Panty Line Promise (it's a lie!) and Gilligan & O'Malley from Target. No luck. Ladies?

My niece has curly hair too - so I'll run this recommendation past her and also see how she feels about other products.
I know that my sis/niece both sometimes gets good deals on high end products (such as Aveda products) on EBay - you might get a good price there.

Unfortunately, I did use Be Curly for a long time and it is near impossible to find it any cheaper. Wonderful product, my favorite actually, but it became too expensive to continue using. I also found that my hair looks best when I switch between a number of products. My second all time favorite is Aussie's Catch the Wave Taming Milk. http://www.aussie.com/collections/catch_the_wave/taming_milk.jsp
It keeps the hair tame and doesn't leave any sticky. Not exactly natural, but it trys. Good luck with your hair… I know it can be an nuisance!

oh, and VPL, I've been getting the microfiber (?) stuff, which is expensive. But I get it on sale (the last time I got 5 for about $30 with a combination of coupon & sale). Mine are from Lane Bryant, but Victoria Secret carries them too, and I think they are the same corporate family. And LB sends me coupons via email all the time…

HI- I am a hairdresser and I specialize in curly girls. I have found the Deva Curl line to be the best for creating a smooth, non frizzy curl. We have recently tried out a permanent frizz reduction product called FrizzCure with inconsistent results. Can you tell more about the product you used and how long the results lasted. You now say your hair is dried out. Did the Aveda line correct that? We are looking to change lines and Aveda is one we are considering.
Thanks-

is aveda be curly good for you hair? I know several aveda products don't receive the best ratings on the environmental working groups cosmetic data base. please let me know if you have any feedback. Just because they sau "organic" and natural does not mean that is all they use! thanks for your help.
very curious.

I too have hard to manage, wavy, & frizzy, hair. Just recently I was introduced and started using Aveda's Be Curly line. I LOVE IT!! And yes, it is great for your hair. Before this I was using Curl Life by Bioage and while it also works (but not as well as Be Curly) I find it really is hard on my hair, making it feel striped and damaged. With Curl Life, my hair feels and looks soft, healthy, and feels luxurious. It now has a wonderful natural shine too. We are all cost concious so I will share a trick I have found. I find with Be Curly I don't have to wash my hair so often. When I do, I do a first wash with another good but less expensive shampoo like Pantene. After rinsing well I then do a second wash with a lesser amount of Be Curly shampoo. I find I still get the same great results in the end. Next I use the Be Curly conditioner and leave it in my hair a while during my shower before rinsing. I don't over rinse my hair before. Then I add Be Curly, Curl Enhancer, but again use this trick. I use about a nickle sized amount of Curl Enhancer as well as an equal amount of Aveda Effexor liquid gel. I mix them in the palm of my hand and then gently work really well through my damp hair, fingering it through all my locks from root to end. This combination will help to keep your curls from frizzing as well as providing some extra hold. Again be careful about using too much, a little goes a long ways here. I finish up by using my hairdrier with defusor and dry my hair. I find flipping my head upside down allows me to get the roots nicely to add a little height. If I have time, I might twirl some locks to add special curls in certain areas. For me however I find the combination of the Curl Enhancer and Effexor work like magic and brings about magical curls, therefore cutting my work down. Everyone raves about my beautiful, soft, natual curls that last all day and can be refreshed easily with a little H20 the next day. Now if I could just find the Be Curly line a little more cost effective I would be the happiest girl in the world. Good luck! Jerri
